ZINE PREVIEW: Self Care

etsyzinehello all,

I recently finished making my first zine. Titled “Sex, Love, + The Whole Shebang,” it focuses on some of my reflections about relationships, feminism, and sexuality. (It’s available on etsy here.)
I thought I’d include one of the pieces in the zine on my blog, both to self-promote and to promote self care. It’s titled “Ways To Love Yourself”:
  • don’t try to change your quirks… ;; don’t get hung up on your little “flaws,” like being clumsy or liking cheesy jokes. even when they’re inconvenient, they’re ultimately not worth worrying about (for example, I have a terrible sense of direction, but these nifty things called maps, GPS apps, and other people all exist to help me)
  • …but know when to change the big things ; recognizing that you need to work on something (an addiction, the way you treat others, being on the wrong academic/career path, the way you sabotage yourself) is hard, but acknowledging these things and changing is an act of self-love
  • listen to your gut ; do what feels right to you, even if it doesn’t necessarily make sense
  • distance yourself from the toxic people in your life ; recognize when someone is selfish or manipulative and generally using you, and give them the boot
don’t “keep your friends close and your enemies closer”
instead, keep your friends close and your enemies so far away that the airfare isn’t worth the trip
  • forgive your past embarrassments and failures ; you are not the sum of your accomplishments or mistakes, you have worth that is inherent to your existence
  • give yourself treats ; take yourself out to do things that you like, without worrying about what other people are doing. find little things throughout your week that make you smile (a long bath, a good book, quality time with a pet or loved one, your favorite meal) and savor them

“to love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance”
-Oscar Wilde (from An Ideal Husband, 1895)

thanks for reading, and don’t forget that you can check out the full zine here
